False Killer Whale #063, or Big John, was first documented traveling through Maui waters in 2014. In 2019, Big John was encountered again in a pod traveling through the area. In 2020, PWF’s Research team encountered false killer whales, including Big John, off the coast of Lana‘i and were able to collect Big John’s body measurements using dorsal photogrammetry and other important data.
