The first sighting of Humpback Whale #134 — Galaxy — occurred in 2001, christening a new era of PWF’s marine research expansion. That same year, PWF Founder Greg Kaufman supplied the Ecuadorean researchers with rolls of film so they could begin collecting photo-ID data and document this whale. According to Ecuador’s Research team, the renowned humpback holds special significance. Galaxy is a survivor that bears scars consistent with a killer whale attack and features a dark black tail, setting the whale apart from typically white humpbacks observed in this region. Galaxy was spotted again in 2019 during a commercial whale-watch tour. When researchers immediately recognized it as HBW #134, they agreed it was high time this celebrated cetacean had a name of its own.
